Farag and El Sherbini Named PSA World Tour Players Of The Month

Egypt’s newly crowned World Champions Ali Farag and Nour El Sherbini have been named PSA World Tour Players Of The Month for May.

Earlier in the month, Ali Farag captured his second J.P Morgan Tournament of Champions title in Grand Central Terminal, New York. Farag was the event’s No.1 seed and after defeating compatriot Mazen Hesham in the semi-final, beat World No.5 Diego Elias in an entertaining final.

He then moved on to Cairo and captured his third World Championship crown after a gruelling week of quality squash. Farag needed five games to beat ‘The Raging Bull’ Mostafa Asal and book his place in the final. Farag then found himself 2-1 down in the final to Mohamed El Shorbagy. He would go on to take the fourth and fifth games to take the coveted title and regain his spot at the top of the rankings in June.

For Nour El Sherbini, May was the month she claimed her sixth World title by beating World No.1 Nouran Gohar in the final 3-1. ‘The Warrior Princess’ has struggled with injury throughout 2022 and came into this year’s World Championship without the form she is used to.

El Sherbini defeated England No.1 Sarah-Jane Perry in the quarter finals and compatriot Nour El Tayeb in the semi-finals, both 3-1. She then beat Nouran Gohar by the same scoreline in the final to take the title for the sixth time and close the gap between herself and Gohar at the top of the rankings.
