Makin and Hesham Take Final Qualifying Spots for CIB PSA World Tour Finals

Welshman Joel Makin and Egypt’s Mazen Hesham have taken the final qualifying spots for next week’s CIB PSA World Tour Finals following the conclusion of the Necker Mauritius Open 2022 Presented by Beachcomber Resorts & Hotels.

The CIB PSA World Tour Finals will take place between June 21-26 in Cairo, Egypt and the event includes both a men’s and women’s tournament featuring eight players each, bringing together all Platinum title winners as well as the reigning PSA World Champions. Any remaining places are allocated to the highest ranked players on the CIB Road to Egypt Standings, with points on offer at all PSA World Tour events during the season.

Going into last week’s Mauritius Open, there were two spots up for grabs in the men’s, with Makin and Hesham sat seventh and eighth, respectively, on the CIB Road to Egypt Standings. However, both were both under threat from 2019-20 CIB PSA World Tour Finals champion Marwan ElShorbagy.

But a surprise second round defeat to former World No.3 Omar Mosaad in the second round in Mauritius brought an end to ElShorbagy’s challenge, meaning Makin and Hesham will line up at Cairo’s Mall of Arabia courtesy of securing a top eight finish on the standings. For Hesham, it will be a debut appearance at the season-ending event.

Ali Farag finishes top of the CIB Road to Egypt Standings for the second season in succession ahead of New Zealand’s Paul Coll, while Peru’s Diego Elias – the winner of the Mauritius Open – finishes in third.

Defending World Tour Finals champion Mostafa Asal ends the season in fourth place ahead of last season’s World Tour Finals runner-up Mohamed ElShorbagy. Former World Champion Tarek Momen will be the other man to feature next week after finishing sixth.

The women’s standings remain unchanged following their final qualifying event, which was the El Gouna International. Nouran Gohar finished top of the standings and will be joined in Cairo by Nour El Sherbini, Hania El Hammamy, Amanda Sobhy, Joelle King, Sarah-Jane Perry, Rowan Elaraby and Georgina Kennedy.
