Abierto Colombiana RD1: Wildcards Torres and Gomez Through

The opening day of the Abierto Colombiana Club La Pradera saw wildcards Juan Jose Torrees and Juan Pablo Gomez both make it through to the second round, winning their opening matches of the competition.

The first day of the Challenger 5 level competition saw Colombian wildcard Gomez take on Argentina’s Jeremias Azana for a place in the second round, and the pair did battle for 80 minutes on court at the Club La Pradera De Potosi.

The first game saw a lengthy tiebreak, with the wildcard coming out on top 16-14, before he then also won the second game to double his advantage in the contest. However, Argentina’s Azana then fought back, winning the third 11-5, before clinching a tight fourth game 11-9 to advance the match into a decider. The last also went to a tiebreak, with Gomez coming through it eventually, winning it 14-12 to book his spot in the last 16 of the competition, where he will face No.3 seed Josue Enriquez of Guatemala.

The other surprise result of the first day in Cundinamarca saw Juan Jose Torres overcome the challenge of Guatemala’s Ricardo Toscano. The Colombiana looked in complete control throughout the contest, winning in just 25 minutes and dropping just 13 points across the match. He will now face Belgium’s Joeri Hapers for a spot in the quarter finals.

The second round of the Abierto Colombiana Club La Pradera takes place on Thursday, June 16, with the top eight seeds coming into the tournament and starting off their campaigns.
