The quarter finals of the Carey Olsen Tortola Classic took place on Thursday evening at the Tortola Sports Club in the British Virgin Islands, with Andrew Douglas coming out on top against compatriot Spencer Lovejoy in the all-American battle of the night.
Douglas came into his last eight contest knowing he had won his previous two meetings with his fellow American, including beating Lovejoy at the Life Time Dallas Open in May. He took the first game of this encounter in the British Virgin Islands 11-9, and from there he was in complete control, dropping just nine points across the next two games to win in three and advance to the last four of the competition.
Douglas will now face Canadian No.1 David Baillargeon in the semi-finals in an all-North American battle after the World No.61 got the better of England’s Simon Herbert in his quarter final contest. A tight firs game saw the Englishman lead 10-8, but Baillargeon fought back, saving both game balls to take it 13-11, and that was crucial in his victory, as he went on to win both the second and third games more comfortably.
The other semi-final will be an all-European clash, as the unseeded Belgian, Joeri Hapers, and Hungarian No.1 Balazs Farkas will do battle on Friday. After the pair both caused upsets on the second day of competition, Hapers overcame Canada’s Liam Marrison in the quarters to make his way into the last four, while Farkas downed Jamaica’s Christopher Binnie to book his place in the semis.
The semi-finals of the Carey Olsen Tortola Classic will take place on Friday, June 24 at the Tortola Sports Club in the British Virgin Islands, with European and North American representation guaranteed in the finals on Saturday.
