Northern Joe Cup RD1: Wildcard Osborne-Wylde Among Surprise Winners

The Northern Joe Cup got underway at a pair of venues across Manchester on Friday evening, with wildcard Sam Osborne-Wylde being one of several players to cause seeding upsets on the opening day of the Challenger 5 level competition.

The 18-year-old, who currently sits at exactly World No.400, was playing in only his third tournament as a professional on Tour, and he came up against fellow Englishman Connor Sheen. Despite being the lower-ranked player, Osborne-Wylde was able to come through their opening round contest in straight games to advance to the last 16, where he will now take on No.6 seed Marek Panacek.

Another Englishman, in Finnlay Withington, also caused a seeding upset on day one in Manchester, as the World No.215 got the better of Pakistan’s Amaad Fareed also in straight games. Elsewhere, Brazil’s Vini Rodrigues got the better of Liam Marrison in a five-game battle, coming from 2-1 down to defeat the higher-ranked Canadian.

There was also a hat-trick of surprise results in the women’s event on Friday, with England’s Grace Clark getting the better of compatriot Katie Cox in five, after holding off a strong fightback from her fellow Englishman. She will now take on Scotland’s Alison Thomson, the No.2 seed for the competition, in the second round on Saturday.

Welshwoman Lowri Roberts and England’s Amy Royle were the other two women to cause upsets, as they got the better of Portuguese No.1 Sofia Aveiro Pita and Wales’ Chloe Foster in their respective first round clashes to move through to the last 16 in Manchester.

The Northern Joe Cup continues on Saturday, July 30 with the seeded players coming into the draw in the second round. All of the action from Fairways Lodge will be streamed live and free on the PSA Challenger Tour YouTube channel. You can keep up to date with live scores from both venues on the PSA World Tour website.
