Torrie Malik (fore) in action against Millie Tomlinson (back) in the semis in Manchester

Northern Joe Cup SF: Malik Double Possible On Finals Day

The finals of the Northern Joe Cup are set in Manchester, with the possibility of double delight for the Malik family, after Torrie came back from the brink of defeat to win in five games against women’s top seed Millie Tomlinson in the semi-finals of the Challenger 5 level competition.

The 18-year-old Englishwoman had never faced off against Tomlinson on the PSA Tour prior to their meeting in the last four at Fairways Lodge, and it looked as if their first meeting was going the way of the former World No.20, who took the opening two games.

The third then went to a tie-break, where Malik was able to come through 13-11 and stay in the contest, before she then went on to win the fourth game as well, sending the match into a decider. Both women had their chances, but it was the 18-year-old that eventually took the victory, winning 12-10 in the fifth after 63 minutes of action to book her spot in the final.

The tournament’s No.3 seed will now face compatriot and No.4 seed Saran Nghiem in the final on Tuesday evening in Manchester, after the World No.109 got the better of Scotland’s Alison Thomson, the women’s No.2 seed, in straight games to reach just the second Tour final of her fledgling career.

After seeing younger sister Torrie make it into the women’s final, Curtis Malik continued his run through the competition as top seed to book his spot in the men’s final at the Northern Joe Cup. He got the better of the unseeded Finnlay Withington in four games, coming from behind after dropping the first game of their contest to win 3-1 in 41 minutes.

The Englishman will now face Welshman Elliott Morris Devred, who came into the competition unseeded, in the final on Tuesday. He took on another unseeded player, in Scotland’s Alasdair Prott, in the last four on Monday evening, and dropped just 13 points en route to a straight games victory.

The finals of the Northern Joe Cup will take place at Fairways Lodge in Manchester on Tuesday, August 2, with all the action from both finals being shown live on the PSA Challenger Tour YouTube channels from 19:00 (GMT+1). You can also keep up to date with live scores from the finals on the PSA World Tour’s website.
