Georgina Kennedy in action for England at the Commonwealth Games

Commonwealth Gold Medallist Kennedy To Make Season Debut At South Western Women’s Open

England’s Commonwealth Games Gold Medal winner Georgina Kennedy will kick off her 2022-2023 PSA World Tour campaign at the South Western Women’s Open in Houston, United States, when the PSA World Tour Gold level tournament takes place at the Houston Squash Club from September 6-11.

The World No.8 will be among the top seeds for the competition, receiving a bye through to the second round, where she will meet either Egypt’s Nour Aboulmakarim or Welshwoman Emily Whitlock for a place in the last eight. She could then face Egypt’s World No.7 Rowan Elaraby, the No.4 seed for the competition, in the quarter finals.

World No.1 Nouran Gohar will be the top seed for the tournament, as she aims to continue the incredible form which saw her win seven titles over the course of the 2021-2022 season. The Egyptian will start the new season against either Hong Kong’s Ka Yi Lee or Tomato Ho in the second round in Houston. She is scheduled to face World No.10 Olivia Fiechter in the last eight, before then possibly meeting Kennedy or Elaraby in the semi-finals.

World No.4 Amanda Sobhy will be the home favourite, and the No.2 seed for the tournament. The American will start her campaign with a clash against either Egypt’s Hana Ramadan or Fayrouz Aboelkheir, the tournament’s wildcard. Fiechter will be the other American amongst the top eight seeds and will face either compatriot Sabrina Sobhy or Finland’s Emilia Soini in the second round.

New Zealand’s World No.5 Joelle King will be the other member of the top four seeds in action at the Houston Squash Club, and she will kick off her season with a second round match against either England’s Jasmine Hutton or Egypt’s Sana Ibrahim, before possibly facing former World No.3 Nour El Tayeb in the last eight of the competition.

Tournament Director Jahanzeb Masood said: “I am very happy to see seven out of the top ten players coming to Houston for the first time for a Gold level event at the Houston Squash Club. Me and my team are very excited to host all the players and I am very thankful to Cotidié for sponsoring this event.”
