24-year-old Egyptian World No.1 Mohamed Elshorbagy will be favourite to lift aloft the third PSA World Series trophy of 2015 when he heads to home soil to contest the 2015 El Gouna International, which gets underway at the Red Sea Resort on Sunday April 5.
Elshorbagy finished as runner-up in 2014 to compatriot Ramy Ashour, the man who also beat him in dramatic fashion in the 2014 World Championship final in December, but he’ll be hoping to carry on his recent dominant vein of form as he aims to collect his fourth PSA World Series title since last August.
Ashour, who hasn’t competed on the tour since winning the 2014 World Championship in dramatic fashion, will be hoping he can once again make a triumphant return to action but with all of the world’s top eight players, including high-flying Colombian Miguel Angel Rodriguez, in the draw, it’s set to be a difficult campaign for all of the top stars.
“We’re very excited to welcome the world’s top stars back to El Gouna in 2015 for what looks certain to be one of the toughest tournament’s we’ve ever seen here,” said tournament promoter Amr Mansi.
“The home-favourites will once again receive tremendous support from the local crowd but with all of the other challengers looking at the top of their game at present it look certain to be an enthralling week of action.”
Ashour will begin the defence of his title in one of the toughest first round matches, lining up against World No.14 Marwan Elshorbagy, while current World No.2 Gregory Gaultier also faces a tough opening match against Cameron Pilley of Australia.
With Tarek Momen facing tricky Indian Saurav Ghosal, James Willstrop facing Stephen Coppinger, Daryl Selby meeting Nicolas Mueller and Adrian Waller taking on Peter Barker in a tough all-English encounter, the first round looks set to test the title-congers from the off.
