Crowd-favourite Ramy Ashour eased into the semi-finals of the 2015 NetSuite Open, PSA M100 tournament, courtesy of a professional 3-1 win over Australian qualifier Ryan Cuskelly in San Francisco today.
Cuskelly, who downed World No.9 Mathieu Castagnet in the first round of the event, showed no fear of the three-time World Champion as he strived to impose his game plan and move Ashour, who’s recent time on the PSA World Tour has been blighted by injury, around the court during some lengthy opening exchanges.
But Ashour was just too good for the World No.29 and despite dropping the third game after some impressive resilience from Cuskelly, he secured passage into the last four without ever truly seeming troubled as he continued his latest comeback to competitive action.
“My main objective tonight was not to lose because the difference between the top twenty players is so thin and I’m sure we’re going to have some even tougher matches in the future,” said Ashour.
“We all push ourselves and train hard and have good and bad days and I’ve been watching what’s been happening over the last few days so I’ve just been trying to learn from every match.
“It’s very cool playing here – you’re basically on the street – and there’s a great vibe and an electrifying crowd so I’m just really happy to be back playing here.”
 Ramy Ashour (EGY) bt [Q] Ryan Cuskelly (AUS) 3-1: 11-5, 11-5, 11-13, 11-4 (58m)
