Egypt’s World No.6 Omneya Abdel Kawy halted the charge of Indian number two Joshana Chinappa, the World No.17, in a closely contested five-game encounter in the quarter-finals of the 2015 Qatar Classic.
Chinappa followed up her first round defeat of World No.1 Raneem El Welily with an impressive 3-0 win over Yathreb Adel in the second round and continued to play some of her best squash of recent times as she attacked constantly against Kawy, recovering from a slow start to take the second and third games in the match and establish a solid position.
After saving five game balls in the fourth momentum was well and truly on the side of the Chennai native but her Egyptian opponent held strong to break the run and take the fourth game and it was Kawy who then dominated the decider, winning a pivotal and attritional rally to go 9-6 ahead which broke the spirit of Chinappa as she then sealed the match 11-8, 9-11, 7-11, 12-10, 11-6 just seconds later.
“I played ok today and Joshana played really well so I don’t know how I got through this one,” said Kawy.
“I took a lot for me to come back and win it but that was something that I had to do and I’m pleased that I was able to go through with it.
‘She’s been playing really well since the Carol Weymuller and getting more and more confidence and obviously beating Raneem is a huge achievement and I think after this tournament everyone will have to be very careful against her.
“I had that in my mind. I had an advantage maybe because I beat her 3-0 at the US Open.”
 Omneya Abdel Kawy (EGY) bt Joshana Chinappa (IND) 3-2: 11-8, 9-11, 7-11, 12-10, 11-6 (50m)
