Raneem El Welily is involved in the battle for the Women's World No.1 spot

Throwback Thursday: El Welily Becomes First Female Egyptian to Lift ToC Title

Egyptian shot-making sensation Raneem El Welily had a magnificent 2015, lifting four PSA World Tour titles before ending Malaysian superstar Nicol David’s unprecedented nine-year reign at the summit of the Women’s World Rankings in September 2015. That feat saw her become the first Egyptian female star in any sport to be crowned World No.1.

Despite eventually relinquishing her position as the world’s leading squash player to England’s Laura Massaro in this month’s rankings, the upcoming 2016 J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions represents a big chance for El Welily to cut the gap between herself and Massaro as she bids to reclaim top spot in the latest instalment of the ongoing battle for the distinction of becoming the World No.1, a battle that also sees a determined David aiming to return to top form.
