The Open Du Gard, PSA M5 main draw gets under way on Saturday January 9 at the Squash des Arènes in Nimes, France in what is only the second PSA World Tour tournament of 2016.
Kuwait’s Ammar Altamimi takes the favourite tag for the title as he looks to capture his maiden PSA World Tour crown.
The World No.107, who was eliminated in the opening round here last year, struggled during the majority of 2015 but an impressive semi-final finish at the Qatar Circuit I in November resulted in a 20-place jump up the World Rankings.
He dropped out of the second instalment of the Qatar Circuit at the first round stage last month after a narrow defeat to Danish Atlas Khan but will be hoping to put that behind him in France. Altamimi faces Christophe Andre in round one, with the Frenchman in fine form after claiming two successive PSA World Tour titles over the past two months.
Swiss No.3 Benjamin Fischer makes his Open du Gard debut and, after reaching the final of the Airport Xmas Challenger at the back end of last year, will be one to watch.
Like Altamimi, Fischer is also looking to break his PSA World Tour title duck and faces a qualifier in the opening round as he aims to kickstart a successful title charge.
Jonas Daehler is seeded third for the event and the 26-year-old is hoping to build on a quarter-final finish at the Xmas Challenger where he actually lost out to compatriot Fischer.
A first round fixture against England’s Miles Jenkins lies in store for Daehler who could face countryman Manuel Wanner in the last eight if both players win their respective matches.
Portuguese World No.162 Rui Soares has failed to progress past the opening round of a PSA World Tour event since July’s Madeira International Open but will fancy his chances of advancing to the quarter-final when he takes on a qualifier in round one. While the 22-year-old does not yet have vast experience, he will go into the tournament as a dark horse and could spring a surprise or two.
