Egypt’s Omneya Abdel Kawy has joined compatriots Nouran Gohar and Nour El Sherbini in the quarter-final stage of the Women’s J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions with a straightforward victory over India’s Joshna Chinappa in New York’s Grand Central Terminal.
Kawy, who has reached the semi-final of all three PSA World Series events so far this season, was kept at arm’s length by her opponent for much of the first game after Chinappa moved her around the court intelligently to craft some openings for herself. Kawy crept into the lead at the tail end of the game however to claim a one-game advantage with an 11-9 margin of victory.
“Amr told me that I had to get back first into the corners and then, when I saw an opportunity, mix up my shots,” she explained.
“I had to work my mind really hard so I could play every shot in the right place. I think it really worked and thankfully Amr is in my box.”
The 30-year-old is set for a tough quarter-final fixture against either 2014 winner Nicol David or Hong Kong’s Annie Au in the next round with the duo set to face off against each other for a place in the last eight.
