World Junior Champion Nouran Gohar continued her stunning rise to prominence after defeating new Women’s World No.1 Laura Massaro in a thrilling five-game encounter in the quarter-final of the Women’s J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions – sealing a semi-final spot in a PSA World Series event for the first time in her burgeoning career.
World No.10 Gohar had lost to the Lancastrian in all six of the pair’s previous meetings on the PSA World Tour but a virtuoso performance from the young Egyptian saw her end her losing streak with a 10-12, 11-9, 5-11, 11-8, 11-9 victory and add Massaro’s name to her list of scalps this season, which also includes Malaysian superstar Nicol David and World No.4 Camille Serme who she beat in August’s Stars on the Bund China Open.
Gohar fought back to wipe out the deficit in game two but the momentum was soon to swing back in the favour of the Englishwoman who, after struggling to get the better of her opponent in the third, ramped up the pressure towards the end of the game to reclaim the lead.
The opening exchanges of the fourth saw a tightly-contested battle play out in front of an enraptured crowd with neither player able to build up a succession of points. A late blitz from Gohar saw the Egyptian pull away and a superb low back-hand kill at game ball saw her send the match into a dramatic fifth.
Both players fought tooth and nail to come out on top during a series of high-octane rallies with Gohar just staying ahead of the Massaro throughout to rack up two match balls. Massaro hit the tin to hand the match to Gohar and slump to the first defeat of her reign at the top of the World Rankings.
Gohar will face either last year’s runner-up Alison Waters or home hope Amanda Sobhy for a place in the final of one of the most prestigious events on the PSA World Tour.
