Sweden Update: Momen Downs Waller to Reach Last Eight
Egypt’s Tarek Momen came through his opening round match in the 2016 UCS Swedish Open in four games after a hard-fought encounter against England’s Adrian Waller in Linköping.
The World No.11 started the game cautiously but soon built up a strong 7-3 lead in the first game. A litany of errors soon followed though from the 27-year-old which allowed Waller to fight back and draw level. After working so hard to battle back, it was then Waller’s turn to make an unforced error on the forehand side and this gave Momen fresh impetus as he closed in to claim a one-game advantage.

Momen then found himself 7-4 down in the second after Waller raced out of the traps, but managed to overturn the deficit to double his lead. Waller had expressed his frustrations with some of the refereeing decisions at the back end of the game and it seemed to have an effect as he lost his focus, allowing Momen to romp to storm into the lead in the third game. However, Waller soon rediscovered his consistency and forced a distracted Momen, who had broken strings on two rackets in as many points, into all four corners of the court to claw a game back heading into the fourth.
Despite the attempted comeback from Waller, Momen shored up his game impressively for the rest of the encounter and held on to complete an 11-9, 11-8, 9-11, 11-2 win and secure his quarter-final berth.
“I’m happy to get my first win here in Sweden,” said Momen.
“The first match is always very tough mentally because it’s a new court and you have to try and get used to it. I’m glad I got through today in four games. It was a bit close, especially the first three.
“I got some time on court to get used to it though so hopefully tomorrow I will play better. I had a big lead in the third game and then, two points in a row, I managed to break brand new strings on my racket. I got really worried that I wouldn’t have enough rackets to continue the match!
“It took me away from the match and all of a sudden I found myself 9-7 down. I tried to fight for that game but I lost it eventually. In the break I had to refocus, forget about the rackets, and push myself in that fourth game to win.
“I had a rough month recently because I have been sick. Physically I wasn’t that prepared for the Tournament of Champions [where he lost to Cameron Pilley in the first round]. I just tried to get myself better and that was pretty much my preparation for this tournament.
“Hopefully tomorrow I will feel much better and keep playing well.”
