Sweden Update: Simpson Slaloms Through to Quarter-Final Stage
World No.23 Chris Simpson came up with a hugely impressive display in his first round encounter with Scotland’s Greg Lobban in Linköping Sporthall to reach the quarter-final stage of the UCS Swedish Open for the first time in six attempts.
Simpson came out on top in the first two games after a relentless battle saw the 28-year-old edge ahead at the end of both games to build up an unassailable lead.

He strengthened his dominance in the final game, wrapping up an 11-7, 11-7, 11-5 triumph in 46 minutes to proceed to the next round.
“I’ve played here so many times and never got through to the last eight so it feels like I’ve broken down a bit of a barrier,” said Simpson
“I’ve been on that court and lost five years in a row so it’s quite a big thing for me to get through. Although I’ve got a lot of respect for Greg because he is a very good player, in the past few years I’ve had [former World No.1] James Willstrop and [current World No.3] Nick Matthew, so I’ve had some difficult draws. It was nice not to come up against a top seeded player in the first round.
“It was a very tough game and I thought it was quite a high quality one so it was all about sticking to my game plan and executing it.”
Simpson will face either second seed Karim Abdel Gawad or local wildcard Rasmus Hult for a place in the semi-final.
