Egyptian World No.25 Mohamed Abouelghar advanced to the next stage of the 2016 Allam British Open, PSA World Series tournament with a superb straight games dismantling of experienced Englishman Daryl Selby – securing a place in the second round of the iconic event for the first time in his career.
The Egyptian played with poise and dynamism as he took advantage of any loose shots from his opponent, with his pinpoint drops and powerful drives punishing an out-of-sorts Selby, who had been struggling with a virus for the last week.

Abouelghar wrapped up the opener in comfortable fashion before fending off a late rally from Selby in game two to double his lead. An audacious top spin drop shot from the back of the court from Abouelghar set the stall out in the third game and and Selby cut a frustrated figure as the 22-year-old Egyptian saw out the win by an 11-5, 11-7, 11-5 scoreline to progress to the next round.
“It feels great to get through, I have been playing the British Open for four years now so getting to the second round is big for me,” said Abouelghar.
“I’m very happy with my performances throughout the tournament so far and I want to keep on playing like that. It’s always great to play against these kind of players, I’ve been watching them since I was 10, so to be able to compete against them and win is a big pleasure and I am very happy with that. Winning in three is always great as well because this will help me be fresh for the next round.
“I have a rest day tomorrow as well so that will help a lot.”
Abouelghar will face either ‘Colombian Cannonball’ Miguel Angel Rodriguez or Germany’s Raphael Kandra in round two.
