Steinmann Sweeps Through to Pilatus Cup Main Draw on Home Soil

Switzerland’s Dimitri Steinmann battled through a stern challenge from England’s Charlie Johnson in the final qualifying round of the Pilatus Cup, PSA M5 tournament to move through to the main draw in his native country for the third event in a row.

The World No.214 was in rampant form in the early exchanges and took a one-game advantage for the loss of just two points after some rapid, attacking squash. Game two was a much tighter contest, with Steinmann claiming it on the tie-break, before the man from Zurich fended off a late charge from his opponent to earn an 11-2, 14-12, 11-8 triumph.

A fixture against compatriot Manuel Wanner awaits Steinmann in the opening round of the main draw, with the pair set to face off for the first time on the PSA World Tour.

Number four qualifying seed Enzo Corigliano will join Steinmann in the main draw after the Frenchman made short work of Phil Nightingale in straight games. His reward is a meeting with the main draw’s number two seed Joshua Larkin up next. Larkin captured the Inno Wood Open crown last time he was in Switzerland and will look to kickstart his ambitions of achieving further glory with a victory over Corigliano.

Corigliano’s compatriot, Victor Crouin, saw off Robert Dadds in style and dropped just a handful of points as he surged to a 3-0 win to set up a first round face off with Jamaica’s Christopher Binnie.

Peru’s Andres Duany was the other victor in the final round of qualifying, prevailing over Amadeo Costa in three to ensure that he will go head-to-head with Patrick Miescher for a place in the quarter-final.
