New Zealand's Joelle King is in action on day one

Key Encounters: Women’s World Championship RD1 Day One

#PSAWorldTour

The first day of action at the PSA Women’s World Championship takes place on Monday April 25, with a number of eye-catching matches on show as the world’s leading stars aim to get their tournaments off to the perfect start in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

One of the most highly-anticipated fixtures on day one is a clash between two former top five players, with New Zealand’s Joelle King taking on wildcard Low Wee Wern for a place in the second round.

King, formerly number four in the world, and Low, a former World No.5, have each struggled with injury over the past two years, which resulted in a fall in the World Rankings for both players.

27-year-old King has now clawed her way back up to ninth in the world, but Low is currently ranked at an eight-year World Ranking low of 42nd as she bids to get back up and running. At their best, both players command a place amongst the world’s elite and spectators could be treated to a fascinating match inside the National Squash Centre.

Number six seed Omneya Abdel Kawy is also in action and will go head-to-head with England’s Emily Whitlock for the first time since the two met in February at the Windy City Open, with Kawy winning 3-1 on that occasion.

Whitlock is currently at a career-high World No.17 ranking after claiming two PSA World Tour titles so far in 2016 and will be looking to spring a surprise on her experienced opponent, who was a World Championship semi-finalist in 2014.

Elsewhere in the draw, Victoria Lust and Joshna Chinappa will face each other, while last year’s runner-up Raneem El Welily gets her tournament under way against Wales’s Tesni Evans.

World No.1 and winner of the 2013 edition of the iconic tournament, Laura Massaro, takes on Samantha Teran in her first round fixture and United States No.1 Amanda Sobhy will have American hopes riding on her shoulders as she meets Megan Craig.

Nour El Tayeb, meanwhile, makes her return from a six month injury lay off against Liu Tsz-Ling, while Malaysia’s Delia Arnold is set to face Mariam Metwally.
