Indian No.1 Joshna Chinappa produced a highly impressive performance against England’s Victoria Lust in the opening round of the Naza PSA Women’s World Championship to move through to the second round in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Chinappa began brightly and rattled off a number of winners in quick succession, before Lust found her way back into the match, only to be held off by a determined Chinappa as the Indian National Champion closed out the first game to open up a lead before some high-quality squash from the World No.14 saw her storm to victory in the second for the loss of just three points.
Lust tried to make things harder for Chinappa in the third and drove the ball fiercely but it was to no avail as a confident Chinappa held on to wrap up the win in straight games to ensure that she will face either World No.1 Laura Massaro or Mexico’s Samantha Teran in the next round.
“Sometimes, the scoreline doesn’t reflect the true game and I was under pressure for many rallies,” said Chinappa.
“The last time I played Victoria, I lost 3-0 and I knew that it would be a hard one coming into this match. I’m just really glad to get through.
“Whoever I play next, with Laura being the World No.1 as well, it will be tough. I will need to stick to my plan.
“I think that I have been quite consistent recently. Each tournament is different but I lost in the first round at the British Open. Everyone in the top 15/16 are really good, you can’t take any match lightly and I’m just trying to give it my best.”
