After suffering a surprise defeat in the final of last week’s Grasshopper Cup World Champion Gregory Gaultier returned to winning ways in his opening encounter at the El Gouna International to see off England’s Tom Richards 3-0.
Gaultier was at his commanding, imposing best as he controlled proceedings from the off and, despite some strong resistance from Richards especially in the mid-stages of all three games, strolled into the second round where South African Stephen Coppinger awaits.
“It’s very hot and humid – it’s tough to play a match like this as your body is not used to it,” said Gaultier.
“The court feels great but it’s bouncy so it’s hard to find the balance between playing fast and economical.
“Tom played some very tough rallies and made me work for every point. The conditions made it harder, it’s the same conditions for both and you have to adapt so I’m happy I managed to come through this tough first round match”
