Egyptian World No.7 Nouran Gohar recovered from a game down to defeat France’s Coline Aumard in the opening round of the Naza PSA Women’s World Championship in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.
It took Gohar, the 18-year-old World Junior Champion, a while to find her range as a tenacious display from Aumard saw her have the better of the early exchanges and she built up two game balls. Gohar fought back to save them, only to see Aumard push the result over the line to go a game ahead, resulting in an almighty shriek of delight from the Frenchwoman.
Gohar needed a response and she got one as she elevated the standard of her game to great effect in the second and third. She started lifting the ball with greater regularity and she dominated proceedings to overturn the deficit, take two games without reply and claim the lead for the first time.
Despite a resilient performance from Aumard in the fourth, Gohar maintained her momentum to record a 10-12, 11-6, 11-5, 11-7 victory and set up a second round fixture with compatriot and best friend Nadine Shahin, against whom she won the British Junior Open title in January.
“I wasn’t really focused at the beginning of the game,” Gohar admitted.
“I couldn’t find my targets and my balls were in the middle. I needed to change it to win the match and [Amr] Shabana told me that I had to move myself in front of my targets so I could find my shots a lot more and win the game.
“I’m really happy to be in the second round of the World Championship. To reach the second round is a very good thing for me. Hopefully, it’s not the end.
“Nadine is my best friend and we train a lot together. We play a lot so we know each other’s games really well. We have a lot of good battles so hopefully it will be a good match and everyone will enjoy it.”
