World Junior Champion Nouran Gohar continued her astonishing rise to prominence after coming through in a brutal five-game contest against World No.4 Camille Serme to reach the semi-final of the Naza PSA Women’s World Championship – ensuring she will compete against compatriot Nour El Sherbini in Bukit Jalil, Malaysia.
Gohar had demonstrated her famed powerful hitting in the beginning of the fixture as she built up a 2-0 lead, before a resilient display of mental strength saw Serme launch a virtuoso fightback to level proceedings. After taking a 7-4 lead in the fifth, Serme looked to be on the verge of completing a terrific comeback, but Gohar dug in her heels and took seven of the next eight available points to secure an 11-7, 12-10, 7-11, 5-11, 11-8 victory in a brutal 75-minute clash.
“I can’t believe I won the match,” said Gohar.
“When I was 2-0 up I was playing very well, but she came back very strongly. She was playing like she wasn’t tired, like we had just started the match. I thought she was in total control in the last game, but my parents and coaches gave me an extra boost to push. I’m really glad I didn’t give up, pushed for the win and I’m really happy to win.
“I will try to recover from this tough match. I’m not going to think about playing Nour tonight, I’m going to relax, sleep well, eat well and recover. I will hopefully play a good match tomorrow.”
Gohar started the stronger of the two as she unleashed a barrage of fierce drives into the back of the court and smashes into the front as her onslaught saw her take the opening game, before an error-strewn start to the second from Serme enabled the Egyptian teenager to double her advantage courtesy of a tie-break victory.
Serme’s never say die attitude shone through and she came out positively to take the third as she hit her lines perfectly to combat Gohar’s relentless power. Serme’s superb spell continued in the fourth, with her deft touch at the front of the court winning her a number of points in succession as she clawed back the fourth, setting up a nail-biting decider in the process.
It looked as if Gohar had found her rhythm again as she marched into a 4-1 lead, but Serme came back once more, taking six points in a row to establish herself on proceedings. There was one more twist to come though as Gohar gave an almighty push to force through an extremely hard-fought victory and reach her maiden World Championship semi-final.
