Argentinian No.1 Leandro Romiglio will be flying the flag for host nation Argentina in the upcoming Decker Camiones & Canal 10 MDP TV Tour de las Americas – Mar del Plata Open, PSA M5 tournament, which begins on Wednesday May 11, as he eyes up a third PSA World Tour title.
Romiglio, who currently holds a career-best World No.99 ranking, has been in fine form recently, with victory at the Assore Central Gauteng Open, in addition to a semi-final finish at the Keith Grainger Memorial UCT Squash Open, seeing him break into the world’s top 100 for the first time.
The 2015/16 season has been Romiglio’s most successful campaign ever, with a bronze medal at the 2015 Pan American Games last summer acting as a precursor to a season that has seen him pick up silverware at two PSA World Tour events, his other title coming at the BDO Northfield Cup last September.
The 25-year-old gets his tournament under way against wildcard and compatriot Juan Pablo Roude and has won on both occasions that the two Argentinians have met on the PSA World Tour.
Colombia’s Andres Herrera is also vying for victory in Mar del Plata as he gets set to make just his second PSA World Tour appearance of 2016 after his previous event, the Taeq SquashColombia PSA Open, pitted him against World No.1 Mohamed Elshorbagy.
Despite going down in straight games to the most dominant force in the sport at present, Herrera performed manfully and the 20-year-old will look to continue his progression with a strong showing in Argentina. The World No.137 opens his tournament against Gonzalo Miranda in round one.
World No.197 Diego Gobbi is also in action and pits his wits against Federico Cioffi in the first round. The 20-year-old Brazilian is yet to lift silverware on the PSA World Tour and has struggled of late, with his four tournaments so far in 2016 comprising of a quarter-final and three first round finishes.
However, he is one of the highest ranking players participating in the draw so could be a dark horse to break his PSA World Tour title duck.
Ireland’s Stuart Hadden is also competing as he bids to progress beyond the first round of a PSA World Tour event for the first time in his career. Like Gobbi, Hadden hasn’t been able to open his title account as of yet and will need to be at his best, starting with his first round fixture against Santiago Orozco Parra, if he is to make a splash in Argentina.
