Ramy Ashour in action during the 2016 British Open

Throwback Thursday: Ashour Claims 2013 World Series Finals Crown

The season-ending Dubai PSA World Series Finals is nearly upon us as the top eight qualifiers across both the Men’s and Women’s Tours get set to battle it out for the lucrative title, with an equal prize purse of $160,000 on offer when the tournament takes place between Tuesday May 24 – Saturday May 28.

One player that will be missing out is Egyptian maverick Ramy Ashour, whose injury ravaged season has seen him appear at just three World Series tournaments, with two of those events seeing him exit the tournament early due to his notorious, ongoing hamstring problems.

The three-time World Champion did make his mark the last time the World Series Finals was held though – where he met long-time rival and compatriot Mohamed Elshorbagy in the 2013 edition in Richmond.

Ashour earned his place in the top eight after dominating the PSA World Tour throughout the year, with four successive World Series wins seeing him maintain his status as the World No.1 for twelve straight months.

Meanwhile, Elshorbagy, who currently holds the distinction of being the world’s top player, was rapidly developing into a force to be reckoned with and captured the Qatar Classic crown which helped him qualify for the tournament.

Both Egyptians were pitted against each other in Pool B, with Elshorbagy triumphing, before Ashour rescued his qualification aspirations by beating James Willstrop and Tarek Momen to finish second and secure a place in the semi-finals.

Up next for ‘The Artist’ was Gregory Gaultier, where the scoring set up reverted back to its usual best-of-five games format after the pools had been played in a best-of-three format. Ashour stormed past the Frenchman in straight games, while Elshorbagy came through an epic five-game thriller with England’s Nick Matthew to set up a final clash against his compatriot.
