Mulvey Moves Past Green in Kent Open

England’s Nick Mulvey produced a stunning comeback to beat compatriot and number one qualifying seed Joe Green in the biggest upset on the opening day of qualifying at the Select Gaming Kent Open, PSA M10 tournament.

Mulvey, the World No.201, looked down and out after conceding the first two games to Green, who seemed destined to canter to a comfortable victory. However, Mulvey battled his way back into the match, and clawed a game back in the third, before squandering a 7-2 lead in the fourth to hand Green a match ball.

Mulvey came back again though, taking three points without reply to level proceedings, before racing into the lead in the fifth to complete a remarkable 4-11, 7-11, 11-6, 12-10, 11-5 comeback victory. The 23-year-old from Harlow will face off against veteran Ben Ford for a place in the main draw after the 40-year-old campaigner recovered from a game down to beat Bradley Masters.

The tournament is held at the Mote Squash Club, and the gathered spectators were firmly behind the club’s head coach, Chris Tomlinson, as he took to the court to square off against Pakistan’s Asim Khan. Tomlinson hit a number of sumptuous winners to seize the early initiative and build up a two-game lead, before fatigue kicked in, allowing Khan to take points at the crucial moments as he eventually came back to win 3-2.

Khan will play Micah Franklin in the final round of qualifying, with Franklin dispatching Gary Nisbet to progress, while World Junior Championship runner-up Youssef Soliman and Ireland’s Brian Byrne will lock horns after respective triumphs over Emyr and James Evans.

European Junior Champion Patrick Rooney will take on Ondrej Uherka of Ukraine in the other final qualifying round fixture. Rooney saw off the challenge of Sean Conroy, while Uherka defeated Rui Soares to move to within a single win of reaching the main draw.
