England’s Angus Gillams has been named as the number one seed for the PSA Angers, the main draw of which begins on Wednesday June 1, where the PSA M5 tournament will be held at Squash du Lac de Maine.
Gillams, 20, has lifted two PSA World Tour titles so far in 2016, with victories at the Sandman Hotels Open Penticton and the JBM Patrol Spring Classic seeing him take his second and third Tour crowns, respectively.
The World No.87’s last appearance came at the El Gouna International in April, where he bowed out of the first qualifying stage to Gregoire Marche.
Gillams is the highest-ranked player in the draw though, and goes up against Spain’s Dani Pascual in round one as he looks to kickstart his title ambitions.
World No.91 Carlos Cornes Ribadas is also in action as he looks to follow up his maiden PSA World Tour title win at the Seapiax Open Lorient last month.
Cornes downed compatriot Iker Pajares Bernabeu in the final in France, and will hope to maintain that for as he bids to double his PSA World Tour title tally. Israel’s Roee Avraham awaits Cornes in the opening round.
Robert Downer makes just his second PSA World Tour appearance of 2016 and will look to improve on the semi-final finish he managed at last year’s tournament.
Downer bowed out to Pakistan’s Tayyab Aslam at the last four stage in 2015, but currently sits at a career-high World No.120 ranking. The 24-year-old, whose last tournament saw him fall in the qualifying stages of the HKFC International, takes on 16-year-old Frenchman Victor Crouin, who battled past Downer’s compatriot, James Peach, in the final qualifying round.
Christophe Andre is another player who will be eyeing up the title after winning four of his last six PSA World Tour events. Two of those titles came in his native France, but he failed to make it past the qualifying rounds at the IG Open de Paris last time out. Andre, who turned 29 three days previously, starts his tournament against compatriot Vincent Droesbeke.
