Malaysia’s Rachel Arnold will compete in the final of the IJM Land 4th Penang Women’s Open, PSA W5 tournament as she looks to emulate older sister Delia, who won this event two years ago.
The younger Arnold confidently brushed aside the challenge of Hong Kong’s Lee Ka Yi, who appeared to be struggling with injury, with an 11-6, 11-7, 11-1 triumph sending her through to her first PSA World Tour final of 2016.
“I feel my match today went much better than yesterday,” said Arnold, who beat compatriot Aika Azman in the previous round.
“I just stuck to my game plan, even though she is injured. For tomorrow, I will be facing Tong Tsz-Wing, and I think tomorrow will be a 50/50 match.”
She will take on another player from Hong Kong, Tong Tsz-Wing, after the number two seed vanquished local hopes of seeing two home finalists with a straight games victory over Arnold’s compatriot Vanessa Raj.
Arnold and Tsz-Wing have met three times over the past two years, with the latter prevailing in each meeting, including a win in the final of the Malaysian Tour Squash V tournament.
“I am happy to win, but was expecting a tough match as I had played Vanessa before, which was much tougher than today’s match,” Tsz-Wing said.
“The hot weather and home advantage for Vanessa made me a bit nervous. I will give my best to face Rachel as tomorrow is the last match.”
