Nour El Tayeb celebrates a huge win

TBT Season Review: El Tayeb Downs El Welily In U.S. Open Thriller

The 2015/16 season will go down in history as one of the most exciting and enthralling seasons in the history of the PSA World Tour, with a series of stunning tournaments and thrilling matches lighting up courts around the globe.

For the next few weeks, our Throwback Thursday pieces are going to look at some of the finest matches of the season as the world’s best players went toe-to-toe in some spectacular, action-packed encounters

2015 Delaware Investment U.S. Open – Women’s QF: [8] Nour El Tayeb (EGY) bt [1] Raneem El Welily (EGY) 3-2: 7-11, 11-7, 8-11, 11-8, 11-9 (69m)

One of the most entertaining women's fixtures of the season came back in October when Raneem El Welily, then Wold No.1, and best-friend Nour El Tayeb, then No.8 – two of the most audacious shot-makers around – met in a compelling 69-minute encounter that was jam-packed with drama, skill and tension from the start.

It started at a blistering pace, with outright winners coming in from every angle as El Welily went 1-0 up. A series of lung-bursting rallies ensued in the second – that had the crowd in Philadelphia's Drexel University on the edge of their seats – as El Tayeb, playing with focus and determination pulled one back

A heavy fall, which ultimately led to a sixth month absence from the Tour, looked to have ended the match prematurely for El Tayeb in the third but she gamely played through the pain after a short injury time out. But, with fiancee Ali Farag supporting from the side lines, she fell behind again.

The fourth was sensational as both raised their levels yet further as they pulled each other around all four corners of the court in a series of breath-taking and physically punishing rallies that had the crowd in raptures. With neither player willing to give any quarter it was El Tayeb who held her nerve to take the match into a crucial decider.

The fifth went point for point until 9-9 when a lucky nick handed the younger player match point which she duly converted to record one of the best wins of her career – and her first over El Welily.
