A relative newcomer to the world of squash, Salming are a Swedish brand who specialise in eye-catching designs and have already signed the likes of 4x World Champion Amr Shabana to their portfolio which also includes the likes of Miguel Angel Rodriguez.
Shabana’s shoe of choice, the Race R1 requires very little break in-time, with the upper feeling ‘ready’ from the first moment you put it on and the shoe giving a very secure feeling across all areas of the foot thanks to ‘EXO-Skeleton’ technology.
The heel-to-toe drop is low so won’t do any favours for those players who are particularly heavy on a heel-first strike but the forefoot has a robust cushioning and gives plenty of rebound-spring.
The outer sole has an extra sticky newly developed compound (Salming claim provides 25% improved traction) which gives you a secure feeling when playing and there’s fancy yet effective rollbar technology in the sides to help prevent you going over on your ankle.
However we did notice that the mesh uppers were inclined to show signs of use, fraying and tearing, after prolonged use.
Eye-catching designs ensure these shoes stand out and they deliver enough on court performance to back up their vivid paintwork. Susceptible to show wear and tear quicker than other more established brands, the Race has the potential to become one of the best shoes on the market with a few modifications to future durability.
- Slightly longer than most so there’s probably room to go down a ½ size to avoid foot movement when planting.
- Good width in forefoot.
- Good toe width.
- Average heel padding.
