Top seed Dipika Pallikal Karthik is on course to win her first PSA World Tour title of 2016 after dispatching Japan’s Misaki Kobayashi in Melbourne’s Sports & Aquatic Centre to reach the semi-final of the Australian Open, PSA W15 tournament.
The Indian No.2 narrowly missed out on triumphing at the Victorian Open last week after a 3-2 defeat to Englnd’s Millie Tomlinson in the final but has since responded well and recovered from a game down defeat Kobayashi by a 3-1 scoreline.
She will face Egyptian qualifier Hana Ramadan for a place in the final after the talented 19-year-old overcame compatriot Nouran El Torky.
El Torky, who also battled through qualification to reach the main draw, started the stronger of the two and built up a one-game lead before Ramadan took the next two. El Torky triumphed on a dramatic fourth-game tie-break to send the match into a decider, but Ramadan rallied in the fifth to close out the win.
Elsewhere, Ramadan’s compatriot, Mayar Hany, overturned a two-game deficit to defeat South Africa’s Siyoli Waters and she will face Australian No.1 Donna Urquhart in the next round after home favourite Urquhart beat Tamika Saxby in straight games.
