Ramy Ashour celebrates after his 2014 World Championship triumph
Throwback Thursday: Ramy’s Greatest Hits
Egyptian maverick Ramy Ashour returned from injury with a bang last week at the Cathay Pacific Sun Hung Kai Financial Hong Kong Open as he battled to his first World Series title since April 2015.
The three-time World Champion’s victory over compatriot Karim Abdel Gawad in the final also means that he has taken an early lead on the PSA Road to Dubai Standings, where only the top eight players will qualify for the lucrative season-ending Dubai PSA World Series Finals.

World No.5 Ashour is one of the brightest talents on the PSA World Tour, with his prodigious shot-making skills and charismatic on-court attitude making him a firm favourite with fans of the sport.
A series of hamstring injuries sustained over the past three years have prevented him from building up any real momentum, but the man known as the ‘The Artist’ will hope that a clean bill of health at the start of the new campaign will soon propel him back to the summit of the sport.
In honour of the mercurial Egyptian’s return to form in Hong Kong, we’re looking back at some of his best moments over the past few years.
2015/16 Shot of the Season v Ali Farag
The corkscrew is a shot usually saved for exhibition matches, not a high-pressure quarter-final fixture in one of the sport’s most prestigious and distinguished tournaments.
But Ashour wowed the crowd at Hull’s Airco Arena during March’s Allam British Open, capitalising on a weak drop from World No.10 Ali Farag to hit a sublime corkscrew winner – eventually winning the award for shot of the season.
2015 El Gouna International Final v Mohamed ElShorbagy
Ashour and World No.1 Mohamed ElShorbagy have had a fierce rivalry down the years and their climactic final clash during last year’s El Gouna International ranks as one of their finest bouts.
With both players performing on home soil, the stakes were high, and the duo put on a real show in front of an enraptured set of spectators, with Ashour eventually taking it after a brutal 94-minute battle on his return from an injury-induced five-month spell on the sidelines.
2014 PSA Men’s World Championship Final v Mohamed ElShorbagy
Five months before their El Gouna International encounter, Ashour and ElShorbagy contested the 2014 World Championship final, which has been referred to as one of the greatest matches of all time.
All eyes were on ElShorbagy after the then 23-year-old had lifted back-to-back World Series titles in the build-up to the tournament but, returning from a six-month injury lay-off, Ashour threw the form book out of the window to prevail in an epic encounter that saw him capture his third and most recent World Championship crown in emotional scenes.
2013 British Open Semi-Final v James Willstrop
One of Ashour’s greatest performance in a single game came against former World No.1 James Willstrop in their 2013 British Open semi-final fixture.
Ashour, then the World No.1, was facing one of the world’s leading players in Willstrop, but blew the Yorkshireman away in an immaculate display that saw him take a one-game lead in just six minutes for the loss of two points.
2013 Tournament of Champions Final Megarally v Gregory Gaultier
One of the greatest ‘MegaRallies’ in existence, this exchange between Ashour and current World Champion Gregory Gaultier in the final of the 2013 Tournament of Champions had a bit of everything.
With Ashour trailing by two games to one, the Egyptian’s lighting-quick reactions and unparalleled accuracy came to the fore as he triumphed in a ridiculous rally, resulting in an iconic celebration from Ashour and laying the foundations for a superb comeback that saw him capture his third ToC title.
