Rooney Keeps Up Charing Cross Title Assault

European Junior Champion Patrick Rooney became the only unseeded player to progress to the semi-final stage of the LOC Charing Cross Classic after recovering from a game down to defeat fellow Englishman Robert Downer in London.

World No.133 Rooney was looking to follow up a superb opening round victory over third seed Chris Fuller, but fell a game behind after Downer’s proficiency on the volley enabled the 24-year-old to unsettle his younger opponent.

The third game saw a frustrated Rooney come out swinging and he rose to a 6-2 lead against a tired looking Downer, only to see a number of unforced errors let Downer back into the match to give the Portsmouth-based World No.153 three game balls.

However, Rooney fought his way back into contention, eventually levelling on the tie-break, before taking games three and four in comfortable style to record an 8-11, 13-11, 11-5, 11-6 victory to send the 19-year-old through to a sixth PSA World Tour semi-final, where he will face top seed Nathan Lake, who downed qualifier Kyle Finch 3-0.

Welshman Peter Creed and Joe Green make up the rest of the semi-final draw after they defeated Lyell Fuller and tournament wildcard James Peach, respectively, to ensure that they will lock horns for a place in the final of the PSA M5 tournament.
