Tournament of Champions: Classic Encounters

#PSAWorldTour

There are just three days until the iconic J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions begins in New York’s Grand Central Terminal, with the prestigious event – which takes place between January 12-19 – offering up crucial points for the PSA Road to Dubai Standings.

World Champion Karim Abdel Gawad heads up the Men’s PSA Road to Dubai Standings and is seeded to meet the man in second place, World No.1 Mohamed ElShorbagy, in a mouthwatering final.

Women’s World No.1 Nour El Sherbini is the title favourite for the Women’s event, but will face stiff competition from the likes of United States No.1 Amanda Sobhy and Women’s PSA Road to Dubai Standings joint-leaders Nouran Gohar and Camille Serme.

To get in the mood, check out some of the greatest matches of the tournament’s recent history below.

2016 Men’s Tournament of Champions Quarter-Final: Nick Matthew v Marwan ElShorbagy

2012 winner Nick Matthew locked horns with the younger ElShorbagy brother in this gargantuan matchup that featured a number of twists and turns throughout the course of the 81-minute battle.

2016 Women’s Tournament of Champions Quarter-Final: Nouran Gohar v Laura Massaro

World No.2 Gohar had been making waves in the build up to last year’s Tournament of Champions after scalping the likes of Malaysia’s eight-time World Champion Nicol David and Frenchwoman Serme in the latter stages of 2015.

The teenager, then 18 years of age, was up against England’s Laura Massaro as she aimed to reach a first ever World Series semi-final, while Massaro was appearing at her first tournament since claiming the World No.1 berth in the January 2016 World Rankings.

2015 Men’s Tournament of Champions Quarter-Final: Miguel Angel Rodriguez v Gregory Gaultier

This quarter-final meeting between Colombia’s Miguel Angel Rodriguez and World No.3 Gregory Gaultier was one of the most eye catching moments during the 2015 Tournament of Champions, with Rodriguez coming into the encounter as a huge underdog having never previously triumphed over the Frenchman.

What followed was a exhilarating battle that saw both players bring the spectators to their feet multiple times throughout the encounter – and you can watch the full match for FREE above.

2015 Women’s Tournament of Champions Semi-Final: Alison Waters v Nour El Sherbini

After stunning defending champion and then World No.1 David in the last eight, Alison Waters took on the dangerous El Sherbini for a place in the showpiece finale.

A strong start from the young Egyptian saw her take a one-game lead, leaving Waters up against it as she looked to reach the final of the distinguished tournament for the first time.

2014 Men’s Tournament of Champions Quarter-Final: Amr Shabana v Nick Matthew

The legendary Egyptian ‘Maestro’ Amr Shabana and Matthew are two of the greatest ever players to pick up a squash racket and they went head-to-head in this exciting quarter-final fixture during the 2014 edition of the Tournament of Champions.

2014 Women’s Tournament of Champions Semi-Final: Laura Massaro v Camille Serme

World No.5 Massaro went up against Serme in an enthralling semi-final clash back in 2014.
