The stars and stripes were flying high in Detroit overnight as USA’s top three, Todd Harrity, Christopher Gordon and Chris Hanson overcame the odds and the seeding to claim victories on the opening day of the 2017 Motor City Open.
Gordon produced the performance and upset of the night as he halted top seeded Egyptian Omar Abdel Meguid in straight games to secure a place in the finals against Ivan Yuen – where the winner will go through to the main draw of the 16-man PSA M70 event.
“I’ve never qualified here, and I would love to get my name up on that main draw board that hangs up here,” said Gordon.
“I’m feeling pretty confident and fresh for tomorrow. Today definitely went the way I would have hoped.”
Gordon was joined in the finals by national #1 Harrity, who profited when Olli Tuominen was forced to retire with injury, and Chris Hanson, the local man who won a thrilling five-gamer, battling back from being down two games to one down to take down Farhan Zaman of Pakistan.
“I got off to a bit of a slow start,” Hanson said. “But once I got my feet under me, I was really able to get into the game.”
“The whole match was really dependent on what he was doing. With his style of play, I had to get him to the point where he would error. I’m happy to come back and get a come-from-behind win.
“This is such a great tournament and a great opportunity for me. I’ll be ready to fire it up again tomorrow.”
