World No.15 Ryan Cuskelly’s title-winning exploits at the Suburban Collection Motor City Open has seen him recognised as the PSA Men’s Player of the Month for January.
Cuskelly, the 29-year-old from Australia, was appearing at the PSA M70 tournament for the ninth year in a row and, despite never making it past the quarter-final stage before this year’s event, had become a real crowd favourite at the Birmingham Athletic Club.
After putting New Zealand’s Campbell Grayson, former World No.3 Omar Mosaad and South Africa’s Stephen Coppinger to the sword, Cuskelly came up against World No.7 Ali Farag in the final, with Farag looking to win the tournament for a second year in a row after also triumphing in 2016.
But a fine display from Cuskelly saw him recover from a game down to triumph in four, capturing his 15th – and biggest – PSA World Tour title, which saw him move back inside the world’s top 15 after the February World Rankings were released yesterday (February 1).
An acrobatic dive from Kanzy Emad El Defrawy
Egypt’s Kanzy Emad El Defrawy is the PSA Women’s Player of the Month for January after the World No.37 claimed back-to-back titles at the Delaware Open and Gaynor Cup.
Despite beginning the month by bowing out of the J.P. Morgan Tournament of Champions in the final round of qualifying, El Defrawy recovered well and powered to victory at the Delaware Open a week later, beating Australia’s Sarah Cardwell in the final.
El Defrawy’s compatriot, Zeina Mickawy, stood in her way in the final of the Gaynor Cup, and an intense match went all the way down to the wire, with El Defrawy eventually taking it in five games to make it four title wins in her last five tournaments.
