Adel and Elaraby Gatecrash Macau Open Main Draw

Egyptian youngsters Yathreb Adel and Rowan Elaraby ran riot over their more illustrious opponents from Hong Kong to earn surprise place in the main draw of the 2017 Macau Open, PSA W50 tournament.

World No.229 Adel, who is appearing at her first tournament since January 2016, continued her giant killing run with a hard fought four-game win over Tong Tsz-Wing, 24 hours after the former World No.25 defeated second qualifying seed Hania El Hammamy.

The 21-year-old will take on tournament top seed Raneem El Welily in round one while reigning World Junior Champion Rowan Elaraby will face Nouran Gohar in a repeat of the 2016 World Junior Championship final, in which Gohar prevailed, after she beat Liu Tsz-Ling.

Elsewhere, top qualifying seed Rachael Grinham avenged her loss to Hong Kong’s Ho Tze Lok at the HKFC International two weeks ago with a convincing 3-0 victory. Grinham will meet fellow Australian Donna Urquhart for a place in the quarter-finals.

Vanessa Chu was the only player from Hong Kong who survived the afternoon after the 23-year-old took four games to score an upset over the higher ranked Milou van der Heijden to earn a match against compatriot Joey Chan in the main draw.

In the men’s tournament, the results went according to the seeding as top qualifying top seeds Raphael Kandra and Mazen Gamal defeated Spain’s Iker Pajares Bernabeu and New Zealand’s Evan Williams, respectively. Kandra's win earns him a berth against Malaysia's Nafiizwan Adnan, while Gamal will face Saurav Ghosal of India.

England’s Joshua Masters took out Hong Kong’s left-handed player Tang Ming Hong in just 24 minutes and he will play top seed Simon Rösner tomorrow.

In an all-Indian clash, Harinder Pal Sandhu beat his young compatriot Abhay Singh 11-6, 11-6, 12-10 in 36 minutes and will play Egypt’s ‘Hammer of Thor’ Omar Mosaad in round one.
