The main draw of the Oracle NetSuite Open begins today (Tuesday September 26) with the SQUASHTV cameras stopping off in San Francisco as the world’s top players battle it out for the honours across both the men’s and women’s draws between September 26-30.
Egypt’s World No.2 Karim Abdel Gawad tops the draw after last year’s champion, France’s Gregory Gaultier, was forced to withdraw due to injury. The Egyptian opens against tournament wildcard United States Faraz Khan.
Second seed Egypt’s World No.3 Mohamed ElShorbagy begins his tournament against Colombian qualifier Miguel Angel Rodriguez and could face last year’s runner-up England’s James Willstrop in the semi-final of the PSA M100 event should both make it through their respective fixtures.
Yorkshireman Willstrop will be looking to go one step better at this year’s tournament as he opens against Qatar’s Abdulla Mohd Al Tamimi in round one. Whilst England teammate and former World No.1 Nick Matthew – who recently announced his plans to retire at the end of the 2017/18 season – starts against Spain’s Borja Golan.
Other strong contenders in the men’s draw include England’s Daryl Selby who gets under way against New Zealand’s Campbell Grayson. Australia’s Ryan Cuskelly who faces Mexico’s Cesar Salazar and Egyptian pair Tarek Momen and Fares Dessouky who face Scotland’s Alan Clyne and Peru’s Diego Elias, respectively.
Meanwhile in the women’s main draw, defending champion England’s World No.4 Laura Massaro leads the charge as top seed and begins her tournament against wildcard Ireland’s Aisling Blake. Massaro could face England teammate Sarah-Jane Perry in the semi-final should both get through their respective rounds, as Perry opens against Canada’s Hollie Naughton.
Fellow Englishwomen Emily Whitlock, Victoria Lust and Millie Tomlinson begin their tournaments against India’s Dipika Pallikal Karthik, Australia’s Rachael Grinham and United States Olivia Blatchford, respectively, as they join the English contingent looking to make their mark on a strong women’s draw in San Francisco.
Elsewhere, second seed, eight-time World Champion Nicol David comes up against Egyptian Heba El Torky in round one of the PSA W50 event. Whilst Egypt’s Salma Hany Ibrahim and Australia’s Donna Urquhart complete a competitive women’s line-up as they open against qualifiers Canada’s Nikki Todd and Samantha Cornett, respectively.
The first round of the Oracle NetSuite Open will be held at local clubs on September 26, with matches from the quarter-finals onwards taking place on the Oracle NetSuite Challenge court on Justin Herman Plaza between September 27-30.
