The main draw of the 2017 U.S. Open Presented by Macquarie Investment Management gets under way on October 7 with the SQUASHTV cameras stopping off in Philadelphia as the world’s top players battle it out at the first World Series event of the season.
This year’s instalment of the U.S. Open represents the first chance for players to earn points for the World Series Standings as they bid to qualify for the season-ending PSA World Series Finals – with only the top eight players on the men’s and women’s standings earning a coveted berth at the lucrative tournament.
The men’s draw has been blown wide open after the withdrawals of World No.1 and top seed France’s Gregory Gaultier and Egyptian maverick Ramy Ashour due to injury and illness, respectively.
Egypt’s World Champion Karim Abdel Gawad now tops the draw following Gaultier’s withdrawal. The World No.2 faces a tough first round draw as he comes up against New Zealand’s World No.10 Paul Coll.
Meanwhile last year’s champion Mohamed ElShorbagy faces Australia’s World No.17 Cameron Pilley and is seeded to meet England’s three-time World Champion Nick Matthew in the semi-finals should both get through their respective fixtures – which would be a repeat of the 2016 final where Matthew was forced to retire after going two games ahead against the Egyptian.
Matthew – who is set to retire at the end of the 2017/18 season – faces Egypt’s World No.20 Zahed Mohamed in round one, while fellow Englishman James Willstrop opens against Mexico’s World No.19 Cesar Salazar.
Other strong contenders in the men’s draw include Egyptian trio Ali Farag, Marwan ElShorbagy and Fares Dessouky, with Farag and ElShorbagy facing qualifiers, while Dessouky takes on tournament wildcard Christopher Gordon.
Meanwhile, in the women’s draw, defending champion Camille Serme begins against tournament wildcard Haley Mendez. Serme wrote her name into the squash history books last year when she became the first Frenchwoman to lift the coveted title.
Top seed and World No.1 Nour El Sherbini opens against compatriot Mariam Metwally. The Egyptian recently reigned victorious at the J.P. Morgan China Squash Open and will be looking to add to her title haul in Philadelphia.
Elsewhere in the top half of the women’s draw, 2015 U.S. Open champion Laura Massaro competes in an an all-English round one fixture as she comes up against World No.22 Millie Tomlinson.
Massaro is seeded on the same side of the draw as compatriot Sarah-Jane Perry, with the World No.7 facing Egypt’s Salma Hany Ibrahim in round one.
In the bottom half of the women’s draw, Egypt’s Raneem El Welily and Nouran Gohar will both get their tournaments under way against qualifiers, while eight-time World Champion Malaysia’s Nicol David begins against Australia’s World No.18 Donna Urquhart.
Qualification for the 2017 U.S. Open takes place between October 5-6, while the main draw will be held between October 7-14 inside the Daskalakis Athletic Centre at Drexel University.
Action from every round of the tournament will be shown live on SQUASHTV (Rest of World) and Eurosport Player (Europe Only), while the semi-finals and finals will be shown live on mainstream broadcast channels around the world, including BT Sport, beIN Sports, Fox Sports Australia and Astro.
