Egyptian duo Mohamed ElShorbagy and Raneem El Welily have been named the PSA Men’s and Women’s Players of the Month, respectively, for December after both were crowned World Champions in Manchester last month.
It was a maiden PSA World Championship title for both players after they had finished as runners up on two previous occasions each.
ElShorbagy – a losing finalist at the tournament in 2012 and 2014 – has been in fine form this season, reaching the final of every tournament he has played in while losing only the U.S. Open to compatriot Ali Farag.
And the Egyptian added the final piece to his expansive title collection as he saw off younger brother, Marwan, in a thrilling final in Manchester.
The ‘Beast from Alexandria’ had endured a tough World Championship draw, facing three-time World Champions Ramy Ashour and Nick Matthew and World No.1 Gregory Gaultier in earlier rounds.
The siblings made history in what was the first time two brothers had contested the final of the iconic tournament in its 41-year history, with Mohamed prevailing by an 11-5, 9-11, 11-7, 9-11, 11-6 scoreline to capture the biggest title of his career and make it six titles from his last seven tournaments.
Meanwhile, El Welily also wrote her name into the sport’s history books as she became World Champion with victory over compatriot and defending World Champion Nour El Sherbini.
The two had previously faced each other in last season’s World Championship final, where El Sherbini claimed the illustrious title in straight games in El Gouna against a nervous looking El Welily to claim her second successive World Championship title.
However, the Cairo-based World No.2 ensured it was third time lucky – after suffering defeats to Nicol David and El Sherbini in 2014 and last April, respectively – as she showcased her resilience to come from a game down, wrapping up a 3-11, 12-10, 11-7, 11-5 victory at Manchester Central Convention Complex.
