Marwan ElShorbagy

Motor City Open: Draw Preview

The main draw for the Suburban Collection Motor City Open begins today, when a handful of the top ten players on the Men’s Tour battle it out for the PSA M70 title.

Egypt’s World No.4 Marwan ElShorbagy heads the draw and will begin his tournament against Mexico’s Arturo Salazar in round one. Salazar – who joins his brother in the main draw – qualified after seeing off Canada’s Michael McCue and Wales Peter Creed.

The PSA World Championship runner-up is seeded to meet New Zealand’s World No.13 Paul Coll – who is at the opposite end of the draw in his first appearance at the tournament – should they both play to their seeding. The Kiwi will line up against English qualifier Nathan Lake in round one.

Defending champion Australia’s Ryan Cuskelly – who beat Egypt’s Ali Farag 3-1 in last year’s final – will start his title defence against France’s World No.30 Gregoire Marche in round one.

World No.18 Cuskelly caused a surprise last year when he saw off defending champion Farag in last year’s final as he came from a game down to win his biggest PSA World Tour title.

Other big names in the main draw include Peru’s Diego Elias who will compete against New Zealand’s Campbell Grayson – who came through qualifying against Egypt’s Karim El Hammamy and Jamaica’s Christopher Binnie – in round one. The World No.10 recently made his return from injury at the Tournament of Champions and will be looking to get back to his best at the PSA M70 tournament.

Elsewhere in the main draw, Egypt’s Mohamed Abouelghar will take on Scotland’s Alan Clyne in round one in only the second meeting between the pair on the PSA World Tour, whilst ‘Swiss Rocket’ Nicolas Mueller faces England’s Richie Fallows in round one.

Colombia’s Miguel Angel Rodriguez will take on Mexico’s Cesar Salazar for a place in the quarter-finals, with the Mexican claiming just one win in the last eight meetings between the pair on the PSA World Tour – back in 2011. While Hong Kong’s Leo Au faces off against Egypt’s Mazen Hesham.
