Tournament top seeds Marwan ElShorbagy and Paul Coll are set to clash in the finale of the Suburban Collection Motor City Open 2018 after prevailing in their respective semi-final encounters with Miguel Angel Rodriguez and Nicolas Mueller.
Second seeded Coll began slowly against Mueller, going one game down after coming out on the wrong side of a 12-10 scoreline.
But the match swung in the second as Coll grasped control, playing with deadly length and control to restrict Mueller and prevent the Swiss man from playing his flamboyant attacking game – a tactic that led Coll to take the next three games relatively untroubled.
“I didn’t quite find my targets in the back of the court in the first game,” Coll said.
“I just really tried to get the ball deeper and make him work, and that seemed like it was the difference.”
Waiting for Coll will be top seed and World No.4 ElShorbagy, who made quick work of 2015 tournament champion Miguel Angel Rodriguez in straight games.
“He’s a great player,” ElShorbagy said of Rodriguez.
“I knew what to expect. The first game was tricky, but I was trying to contain him as much as possible and play my game. I believe accuracy beats speed.
“I’ve played this tournament a lot of times and I’ve never reached the final.
“Being in the final tomorrow means a lot to me. I’ll give it everything. (Coll) is a great player and I expect a tough match.”
