Marwan ElShorbagy collected his first title of 2018 courtesy of victory over New Zealand's Paul Coll in an epic climax to the 2018 Suburban Collection Motor City Open, PSA M70 event in Detroit.
After coming through the draw to reach the title-decider, top seed ElShorbagy and second seeded Coll clashed in a 96-minute marathon battle that went all the way to the wire in what was one of the greatest matches in tournament history.
A strong start from the Egyptian saw him outlast Coll in a tough 22-minute opening game, only for Coll to level the scores in a similarly tight second.
The pair continued to trade points, and games, as the match moved into a decisive fifth where ElShorbagy opened up an 7-3 lead. Coll fought back to level things at 8-8 only to hit a tin and hand momentum back to ElShorbagy, who with the help of a stroke decision on match point, managed to seal the at the first opportunity.
“It was a tough match,” ElShorbagy said afterwards.
“It was the longest of my career. It doesn’t get any tougher than beating (Coll) on this court with how it plays. The points never ends. I had to be very strong mentally.
“I’m really pleased to win my first-ever Motor City Open. This is great for me, it’s amazing. I’m so happy.
“To come back here next year and see my name on the wall will mean a lot to me.”
