Macau Open: Preview

There is just one day to go until the main draw of the 2018 Macau Open begins with a selection of big names all in action across the men’s and women’s draws between March 29 until April 1.

France’s World No.6 Camille Serme heads the women’s draw and faces Egyptian qualifier Yathreb Adel in round one as she looks to capture her first title of the season. Serme could face Egypt’s Nouran Gohar in the final, with the Egyptian positioned at the opposite end of the draw, should both players play to their respective seedings.

2017 Macau Open champion Gohar will begin her title defence against Hong Kong’s Liu Tsz-Ling in round one.

The Egyptian defeated New Zealand’s Joelle King in the final of the 2017 instalment of the tournament– only dropping one game throughout the entire tournament.

Other big names on the women’s draw include Hong Kong’s World No.11 Annie Au who faces France’s Coline Aumard in round one. While, United States World No.13 Olivia Blatchford takes on tournament wildcard Gigi Yeung and England’s number five seed Emily Whitlock faces Canada’s World No.36 Hollie Naughton in round one.

Elsewhere, Hong Kong’s World No.19 Joey Chan will face the Netherlands World No.40 Milou van der Heijden in her 150th tournament on the PSA World Tour.

Also, in round one, Egyptian duo World No.21 Salma Hany and World No.23 Mariam Metwally will face Belgium’s World No.30 Nele Gilis and United States World No.46 Haley Mendez, respectively.

In the men’s draw, Spain’s World No.21 Borja Golan is the top seed and will take on qualifier and compatriot Iker Pajares Bernabeu in round one. The Spaniard recently captured his first title in just under two years at the Montreal Open when he beat Malaysia’s Nafiizwan Adnan in the final.

At the opposite end of the draw Egypt’s number two seed Omar Mosaad – who reached the quarter-finals of the 2017 Macau Open – will take on compatriot Karim Ali Fathi in the first round.

Other big names in the men’s draw include Hong Kong trio Leo Au, Max Lee and Tsz Fung Yip who will face Egypt’s Mohamed Elsherbini, Karim El Hammamy – who knocked out top seed Todd Harrity in qualifying – and Spain’s Edmon Lopez in their respective first round ties as they bid for a place in the quarter-finals of the PSA M50 event.

Egypt’s World No.32 Mazen Hesham will face tournament wildcard World No.525 Steven Liu, while compatriot Omar Abdel Meguid and Qatar’s Abdulla Mohd Al Tamimi face Finland’s Olli Tuominen and Germany’s Raphael Kandra, respectively.
