Weekend Roundup: Aitken Takes Honours in Bangor as Yuen and Douglas Triumph

World No.65 Lisa Aitken became the first player to win a women’s PSA World Tour event held in Wales after she defeated English qualifier Lucy Beecroft to take the trophy at the Karakal Bangor Classic held at Bangor University.

The PSA W5 tournament – which was ran by Welsh World No.12 Tesni Evans – was Wales’ first women’s tournament on the PSA World Tour and saw British players dominate as they took up three of the four semi-final spots.

21-year-old Beecroft, the World No.143, was the surprise package of the tournament as she battled through qualifying to reach the main draw, before she overcame the number two and number three seeds en route to a maiden PSA World Tour final.

Aitken, meanwhile, blitzed through to the final without dropping a game and she kept that run going against Beecroft as she recorded an 11-7, 11-1, 11-4 victory to earn her third PSA World Tour crown.

There were also title wins for Malaysia’s World No.71 Ivan Yuen and United States player Andrew Douglas, who took the honours at the ILT & Community Trust NZ Southern Open and the BTMI Barbados Open, respectively.

Yuen got the better of Australia’s Rex Hedrick to capture his eighth PSA title, while Brooklyn-born Douglas – the World No.161 – opened his title account with a 3-0 win over fellow American Spencer Lovejoy.
