Malaysian Open: Low Reaches Quarters on Return to Action

Malaysia’s former World No.5 Low Wee Wern returned to PSA World Tour action after nearly two years out as she reached the quarter-finals of the Malaysian Open.

The Malaysian has been plagued with serious knee injuries for the last few years of her career, with her last appearance on the PSA World Tour coming at the U.S. Open back in 2016. Her World Ranking has also suffered a consequence with her ranking dropping from inside the top ten in 2015 to now at World No.254.

However, Low got her comeback off to a momentous start as she came through qualifying to knock out number eight seed Hong Kong’s Tong Tsz-Wing in straight-games and book her place in the quarter-finals of the PSA W15 tournament.

She will now face number two seed Liu Tsz-Ling in the next round after she knocked out Philippines Jemyca Aribado 3-1 in round one.

All of the other top women’s seeds also prevailed on day one with Egyptian top seed Omneya Abdel Kawy – who was featuring in just her second tournament since giving birth to her son – now faces Ho Tze-Lok in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, it was a similar story for the men’s draw in round one as all of the top seed prevailed with only number six seed England’s Chris Simpson falling victim on day one.

World No.39 Simpson was one game up before India’s World No.77 Mahesh Mangaonkar battled back to win 7-11, 11-7, 11-6, 11-7, 11-6 in an hour to book his place in the quarter-finals of the PSA M35 tournament.

Mangaonkar will now face number two seed Hong Kong’s Tsz Fung Yip in the quarter-finals after he saw off Sebastien Bonmalais in straight-games in round one.

Men’s top seed Hong Kong’s Leo Au is also through to the quarter-finals after he defeated England’s Angus Gillams in round one and will now face Malaysia’s home hope Nafiizwan Adnan in the next round.
