Nour El Tayeb in action against Amanda Sobhy at last week's U.S. Open

Carol Weymuller: Tournament Preview

The 45th annual Carol Weymuller Open takes place this week from October 17-22, with a high-quality draw of players heading to the Heights Casino in Brooklyn for the women’s PSA Bronze event.

The Carol Weymuller Open will be the first PSA World Tour Bronze tournament to take place under the new PSA Tour structure, meaning that qualification has been scrapped and a 24-player draw will battle it out for the title, with the top eight seeds receiving a bye into the second round.

Egypt’s World No.3 Nour El Tayeb leads the draw and receives a bye into the second round, along with the other top eight seeds.

She will take on either United States World No.43 Haley Mendez – who grew up playing at the Heights Casino – or compatriot and World No.19 Hania El Hammamy depending on who wins in their first-round encounter.

Other big name players include England’s Sarah-Jane Perry, who recently enjoyed success in the States when she successfully defended her title at the Oracle NetSuite Open, defeating reigning World Champion Raneem El Welily in the final. Perry is situated at the opposite end of the draw to El Tayeb and could meet the Egyptian in the final if the seedings go to plan.

Perry is joined by compatriot Alison Waters, who is the number three seed, and Wales’ World No.12 Tesni Evans, who enjoyed a strong performance at the U.S. Open reaching the semi-finals of the PSA Platinum event.

The home interest comes in the form of World No.16 Olivia Blatchford, World No.18 Amanda Sobhy and Mendez.

You can follow the live scores from the day's play. Starts at 17:30 local time (GMT-4)
