Melissa Alves celebrates with coach Philippe Signoret

Monte Carlo: Alves on Form to Reach Round Two

French World No.106 Melissa Alves earned her place in the second round of the Monte-Carlo Squash Classic, PSA Challenger event after overcoming the higher-ranked Dutchwoman Tessa ter Sluis 3-0 at Monaco Squash Club.

Alves is in red-hot form after claiming her third PSA Tour title at the Val de Marne at the weekend, with a 3-0 win over Grace Gear in the final also seeing her qualify for February’s PSA World Championships due to the tournament’s status as a World Championship qualifying event.

And the 24-year-old from Créteil made it six wins on the bounce with an 13-11, 11-6, 11-3 victory over ter Sluis that will see her take on Latvian No.8 seed Ineta Mackevica in the last 16.

Alves will be joined in the second round by fellow French players Marie Stephan and Enora Villard. World No.176 Stephan defeated Nadia Pfister of Switzerland to set up a meeting with England’s Millie Tomlinson, while Villard, the World No.60, will play the United States’ Olivia Fiechter after receiving a bye.

The second round will see all top eight seeds come into play as World No.8 Laura Massaro and World No.9 Tesni Evans begin their title challenges.

Massaro, a former World No.1, will get her tournament under way against Menna Hamed, while Evans, who last month become the first Welshwoman ever to break into the world’s top 10, will take on England’s Rachael Chadwick.

The 2018 Monte-Carlo Classic is the 23rd edition of the tournament and features $18,000 of prize money. The finals will take place on Friday December 7.
