France’s Melissa Alves and United States’ Olivia Fiechter upset the seedings on day two of the Monte-Carlo Squash Classic as they claimed surprise wins against No.8 seed Ineta Mackevica and No.7 seed Enora Villard, respectively, at the Monaco Squash Club.
World No.106 Alves comes into this tournament off the back of title success at the Val de Marne last week and the 25-year-old followed up her opening round win over Dutchwoman Tessa ter Sluis with an 11-6, 11-4, 11-7 triumph against Latvia’s Mackevica.
Up next for Creteil-based Alves is a quarter-final match with World No.9 Tesni Evans, who began her tournament with a comfortable 3-0 victory against England’s Rachael Chadwick.
Meanwhile, World No.69 Fiechter overcame Villard by an 11-8, 11-6, 11-6 margin to ensure she will play Egypt’s No.4 seed Mayar Hany in the next round.
Elsewhere, top seed Laura Massaro dispatched Menna Hamed to set up a quarter-final fixture with the in-form Canadian Samantha Cornett, who is chasing a third successive PSA Tour title.
English duo Millie Tomlinson and Julianne Courtice will line up in the other quarter-final fixture after they achieved respective wins over France’s Marie Stephan and Anna Serme of the Czech Republic.
