Adrian Waller (r) overcame the No.6 seed Raphael Kandra in five

Motor City Open: Waller and Salem knock out seeds in second round

England’s Adrian Waller and Egypt’s Zahed Salem both knocked out seeded players in the second round of the Suburban Collection Motor City Open 2019.

The pair both beat the favourites in their respective matches in five games to advance to the quarter-finals in Detroit.

World No.39 Waller came from behind to beat the tournament’s No.6 seed Raphael Kandra in a 70-minute match, 9-11, 12-10, 11-6, 5-11, 11-7.

“That was a tough match. Both of us really put everything on the line,” Waller said after his match.

Zahed Salem defeated the World No.18, Nicolas Mueller in just under an hour, as he continues to bounce back from a hamstring injury he suffered at the end of 2018.

“In the fifth, I told myself I’m here to win,” Salem said. “After the injury, I lost some confidence and I wasn’t playing that well. But I’m looking for more and more.”

Elsewhere, both American hopes fell at the hands of Egyptian opposition. World No.10 Mohamed Abouelghar got the better of Todd Harrity, while Tournament of Champions quarter finalist Omar Mosaad defeated Chris Hanson.

The tournament’s top seed, Marwan ElShorbagy, made it four Egyptians through to the last eight, as he beat compatriot Mazen Hesham.

The South American pair of Miguel Rodriguez and Diego Elias are also through to the quarters, having got the better of Mathieu Castagnet and Cesar Salazar respectively, though Salazar had to retire through injury.
